"In 2024, I undertook a rewarding project to restore and enhance the shoreline of my property. The process began with grading the slope to improve both its stability and aesthetic appeal. I then planted a diverse mix of native wildflower seeds which have continued to thrive and bloom beautifully. Over the past year the transformation has deepened: along with the wildflowers, young bur oak, catalpa, sumac, and spruce seedlings have been planted, setting the stage for a future canopy and layered habitat.
The revitalized shoreline now supports a vibrant tapestry of life. Pollinators—bees, butterflies, and countless other insects—buzz constantly among the blooms. Birds regularly visit to feed, nest, and find shelter. A turtle even appeared this summer: a welcome sign of a healthy and inviting ecosystem. Deer, frogs, and other wildlife continue to make regular appearances and the increased biodiversity is a testament to the success of the restoration.

This project has been incredibly gratifying both personally and professionally. As a Park Services Representative at Long Beach Conservation with the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA), I am passionate about enhancing natural spaces and creating resilient wildlife-friendly landscapes. Seeing my own property flourish with native plants and wildlife has reinforced my commitment to conservation and demonstrated the power of hands-on stewardship."
