Who are the Ontario Stewardship Rangers (OSR)?
Stewardship Rangers are supported by local stewardship councils, their Stewardship Coordinators and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Each team consists of 4 high school students and a Team Lead. Stewardship teams are located throughout Ontario including the Carolinian Life Zone and provide summer employment for interested youth.
Rangers are energetic and like working outdoors. Tackling alien species removal and saving rare turtles is all in a day's work for these intrepid students. For instance, Rangers enjoy:
- Helping out with research initiatives such as monitoring reptiles and amphibians
- Getting their hands dirty by removing invasive species such as periwinkle
- Teaching children by helping out with educational activities such as environmental festivals
When can Ontario Stewardship Rangers help me with my project?
The Rangers work from the beginning of July until the end of August. They are available to accomplish tasks during that time. However, Team Leads complete work planning for the summer in June. This is why we want to hear about your potential projects located within the Carolinian Life Zone as soon as possible.
What to consider when applying for assistance
- Priority will be given to projects associated with the stewardship of rare species or habitat
- Organizations and individuals are eligible to apply for assistance
- Rangers are able work on public and private lands within the Carolinian Life Zone
- An education and training component of the proposed project is highly valued
- Safety is important! While Team Leads play a supervisory role, our application process encourages additional health and safety considerations
