"Best" Birds So Far | Carolinian Canada

"Best" Birds So Far

Thursday, April 23, 2015 - 8:00pm

I think I'm very much on track for my goal of 270 species (in counties within or overlapping with the Carolinian zone of Ontario).  "Best" birds so far have included "chasing" reported rarities like Painted Bunting, Neotropic Cormorant, Barrow's Goldeneye, Harris's Sparrow, Fish Crow and Varied Thrush.  But my actual favourites have mostly been local sightings, like the American Woodcock and a Hoary Redpoll at the T.J. Dolan Natural Area at home here in Stratford, the courtship display of two Horned Grebes on Lake Victoria, also in Stratford, nine Fox Sparrows at the Stratford Country Club one morning, and following the progress of a pair of Merlins nesting in an abandoned crow's nest next to our house on Cobourg Street.
