Rock Point Provincial Park

The story of rock point begins over 350 million years ago at the bottom of a tropical sea. The rock that gives rock point its name is actually the remains of a coral reef which has now turned to limestone.  Early on, the Park was managed for resource extraction purposes; the organic matter deposited during the time of the tropical sea had transformed into natural gas.

Since that time, the Park has been recognized as valuable for other reasons. Rock Point Provincial Park is a haven for rare and endangered species of reptiles like the Eastern Hognose snake, the Blue Racer snake and Fowler’s toad. The Park is also an important stopover for migratory birds and butterflies, earning it an Important Bird Area designation. The abundance of migratory birds made this site an ideal choice for a bird banding station as part of the Haldimand bird observatory effort.
