In Canada we are lucky to have access to fresh water, and are stewards of 7% of all the renewable freshwater in the world. In Carolinian Canada we are surrounding by the Great Lakes. These lakes are important economically, are a source of drinking water for millions of people, and are home to many species of plants and animals. However all of that is at risk from litter and pollution.
Much of the garbage found in bodies of water starts on land and is carried downstream by wind and rain. No matter where you are, make sure you dispose of your waste properly. Many types of garbage may look like food to animals, and eating this can be extremely harmful. Animals also get tangled in garbage like fishing line. And contaminants from various sources can end up in our drinking water.
In addition to our everyday actions, there are organized events such as the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup which you can join in your community to make a larger impact.
Certification programs also exist, encouraging sustainable development of beaches and marinas. The Blue Flag Programme bases their membership on water quality, environmental education, environmental management and safety.
