Backus Page House Museum

Located within the grounds of John E. Pearce Provincial Park, the Backus-Page House Museum was built by build Robert Morris for the Backus family in the 1850s and is located in the heart of the old Talbot Settlement.  The Backus family obtained the land from Colonel Thomas Talbot and called the homestead Lakeview; when the Backus family owned the property, they logged the land in between the house and the lake, affording the house and impressive view of Lake Erie.  Since then the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has reforested that area.

Although the house is brick, much of the lumber, such as pine, ash and tulip used to frame the house were harvested from the adjacent Carolinian forests.

The museum, operated by the Tyrconnell Heritage Society, celebrates the history of the Talbot Settlement and invites visitors to step back in time, and explore the life of a Talbot Settlement resident.  Find out how one went about bathing or cooking in the 1850s or how agricultural practices have transformed over the last 100 years.
