Carolinian Zone Ecologist

Carolinian Canada Contract Position

Contract: 6 months, FT

Deadline: September 11, 2015

Starting: October 2015

Compensation: Commensurate with experience. This position will be particularly suited to a strongly-motivated, experienced conservation professional (mid-career, or an “early-career high-achiever”) who is inspired to work in the challenging but rewarding environment of a small but important conservation NGO.

Focus: 1. Landowner Leaders program, Carolinian Habitat Action Plans; 2. Life science inventory fieldwork and reporting; 3. Ecological restoration planning; 4. Species At Risk and ecosystem recovery education and outreach; 5. Carolinian Canada Conservation Action Plan implementation and monitoring; 6. Fund-raising.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit new landowners to Landowner Leaders (LL) program;
  • Assist LL program participants in developing Carolinian Habitat Action Plans for their properties;
  • Organise LL events and media releases;
  • Assist with life science inventory fieldwork, site assessments, mapping and reporting;
  • Assist in the development of ecological restoration plans;
  • Organise Species At Risk and ecosystem recovery outreach events, including the annual Ecosystem Recovery Forum;
  • Work with diverse stakeholders to promote Carolinian Canada “Big Picture” principles, especially related to ecosystem recovery;
  • Fund-raise for continuation of position;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Expert-level knowledge of ecosystems, flora and fauna of the Carolinian Life Zone of southern Ontario (botanical expertise a particular asset);
  • Proven experience in life science inventory, site evaluations, ecological land classification, Species At Risk surveys, and standardized natural heritage data reporting methods;
  • Strong background in Species At Risk recovery planning, ecological restoration planning and implementation;
  • Demonstrated track record in delivery of high-quality reports, publications, media releases;
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills;
  • Experience in the preparation and delivery of public presentations;
  • Demonstrated experience in working with diverse sectors (e.g., First Nations, public agencies, rural landowners, corporations, NGOs);
  • GIS experience a strong asset;
  • Understanding of and experience with “Open Standards”, Miradi software and/or “Conservation Action Planning” approaches a strong asset;
  • Ability to work from home office with minimum supervision and to meet tight deadlines;
  • Strong leadership, team and organizational skills;
  • Demonstrated grant-writing ability and past fund-raising success.

Ability to travel throughout Carolinian life zone as needed.
