Leave a legacy by financially supporting a Land Trust or gifting a piece of your land
If you are a landowner who would like to see your property protected and stewarded for future generations, you may want to consider donating your land to a Land Trust. Land Trusts are charitable organizations established to preserve significant lands in their community. Some Land Trusts focus on natural properties, while others may be interested in ones with recreational, historical or agricultural significance.
There are options to donate your land directly to the Land Trust, which can result in substantial tax benefits for the donor through the EcoGifts program. Another option includes a conservation easement, which is an agreement between the land owner and the land trust which restricts future development on the property.
