North Shore Standup Fundraiser Paddles to Success

On August 23rd you helped us paddle toward a greener future by supporting the 2nd Lake Erie North Shore Standup. Thank you!

Photos: Sarah Hodgkiss

The fundraiser was a complete success. We raised over $1700 for the Erie Coastal Stewardship EcoTrail, and thanks to a superb fleet of volunteers and fantastic group of paddleboarders, everything went off without a hitch. The day started off cool and the water glassy, with the sun coming out at full force just in time for our celebration barbeque and awards ceremony.

I participated in the 5km race. As a novice paddleboarder, I was prepared for a challenge and that’s exactly what I got. But what a fun challenge – it’s such a great way to explore Carolinian Canada.

The Erie Coastal Stewardship EcoTrail celebrates the culture and nature of Lake Erie by connecting you to over 80 coastal treasures along 600+ of shoreline and river valleys. These sites let you experience some of Canada’s most outstanding natural diversity, fascinating heritage, and unique scenic adventures.

On August 24th, paddlers and friends were invited on a guided hike of Marcy’s Woods with the Bert Miller Nature Club. Marcy’s Woods is a private nature reserve comprised of 285 acres of intact Carolinian forest and vegetated sand dunes.

If you missed the event, stay tuned for next year. If you’d still like to donate to this event and the Erie Coastal Stewardship EcoTrail, click here. Thanks once again for all your support!

Thanks to the support of Environment Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and a host of other partners for supporting our programs to "Green the Future of Canada’s Deep South".

2014 ECOSYSTEM RECOVERY FORUM
The Big Picture after 15 Years: Revisioning the Vision

Find Out More
Carolinian Canada’s 2014 Ecosystem Recovery Forum is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Carolinian Canada as an organization, as well as the 15th anniversary of our conservation strategy the Big Picture. The Big Picture is about restoring a green, healthy, functioning ecosystem of natural cores and corridors across one of Canada’s most biologically diverse and threatened landscapes.

This year’s Forum will celebrate some of the great conservation successes in the ecoregion as well as examine challenges we face in a part of Canada that has seen rapid, large-scale change over the past three centuries. We will examine the tools we have at hand to monitor this change. And we will look forward, asking what must we do to achieve the Big Picture vision in coming years?

Join us on October 29th 2014 at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington to celebrate the history and success Big Picture and help us create the vision for the future. Carolinian Canada is currently accepting applications for speakers at the 2014 Ecosystem Recovery Forum. Visit caroliniancanada.ca for more information and to submit your application today.

Big Picture Talks

The Lusty Family Tract Campaign
Sarah Hodgkiss, Program Manager

The Carolinian Canada Coalition has had its eyes on Elgin County this past year with the Elgin Natural Heritage Inventory. But we aren’t the only ones. The Thames Talbot Land Trust, who already own three properties in Elgin County, are in the process of acquiring a fourth – The Lusty Family Tract.

Carolinian Canada and the Thames Talbot Land Trust are just two of the partners who began working on the Elgin Greenway Conservation Action Plan (CAP) in 2010. This collaborative conservation strategy identified priority conservation targets in Elgin County, and the associated threats to those targets. The team then decided on objectives and strategies to mitigate the threats, and conserve the ecosystems and species. The plan specifies what will be done, where and when, and which group will take the lead for the most effective outcomes.

The Elgin Greenway CAP has multiple objectives around restoration, land stewardship, invasive species control, road mortality reduction, and sustainable agriculture. While Carolinian Canada has taken the lead on the recommended Natural Heritage Inventory, TTLT has taken the lead on the land securement objectives. The Elgin Greenway map, developed with Ontario Nature at the same time as the CAP, has helped TTLT to identify and prioritize areas where they can focus their land securement efforts.

Click here to read the full article and learn more about the Lusty Family Tract and why it is an important acquisition

I am personally contributing to the Lusty Family Tract campaign to help protect this section of the West Lorne Woods. I hope you will consider helping them reach their goal of $132,000 for the purchase, management and stewardship of the property. You can click here to visit TTLT’s website to make a donation – and TTLTs Opportunities Fund will match every dollar you contribute.
