Celebrating 30 Years of Conservation Success
Become a Member Today!
It is an exciting year for Carolinian Canada – 2014 marks our 30th Anniversary! We kicked off our celebrations at our Annual General Meeting and Conservation Awards Ceremony on May 22nd in St. Thomas. The day began with a bus tour of Canada’s Deep South, stopping at a few natural treasures in the Carolinian Life Zone, including Yarmouth Natural Heritage Area (once a critical unprotected natural area), the Carolinian Life Zone exhibit at Jaffa Environmental Education Centre and stewardship demonstration sites at Ron Casier’s property.
Celebrations continued at the Canada Southern Railway Station with the Chair’s lunch, storytelling and the official business portion of the Annual General Meeting. We closed the day with our annual Carolinian Conservation Awards, always a highlight of our year.
The Carolinian Conservation Awards recognize Conservation Heroes, bold action-takers who protect habitat and species at risk in the Carolinian Life Zone. This year presented ten awards to much deserving individuals and groups. Our lifetime achievement award winners exemplify long-term stewardship. Joe and Joyce Hickson have planted over 23,000 trees on their property in Leamington. Joe has been an active steward of his land for over 80 years. Dave Wake’s conservation-related work has spanned 50 years. He was a leader in protecting Westminster Ponds Environmentally Sensitive Area in London.
Other recipients include David Ainslie, Joe Csoff, Gunther Csoff, Angelle and Clen van Kleef, Paul Gagnon (individual category), Brad Renaud (youth), and John and Cynthia Cook and the Jaffa Environmental Education Centre (group). Read about their many accomplishments here.
Consider joining us in the next 30 years of conservation in Carolinian Canada.
Thanks to the support of Ontario Trillium Foundation, Parks Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment Canada and a host of other partners for supporting our programs to "Green the Future of southwestern Ontario".
