The Big Picture After 15 Years: Revisioning the VisionCarolinian Canada’s 2014 Ecosystem Recovery Forum is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Carolinian Canada as an organization, as well as the 15th anniversary of our conservation strategy, the Big Picture. The Big Picture is about restoring a network of green, healthy, functioning ecosystems in one of Canada’s most biologically diverse and fragile landscapes. This year’s Forum will celebrate some of the great conservation successes in the ecoregion as well as examine challenges we face in a part of Canada that has seen rapid, large-scale change over the past three centuries. We will examine the tools we have at hand to monitor this change. And we will look forward, asking what must we do to achieve the Big Picture vision in coming years? The 2014 Ecosystem Recovery Forum will take place on October 29th at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington. Register today to take advantage of the “early bird” discounted rates! There are still limited spaces available for those who wish to bring an organization display to the event. Be part of the Big Picture – join the discussion on October 29th! Hunting Season Starts Soon Sara Howe, Elgin Natural Heritage Inventory Assistant Image: Broad Beech Fern - Jarmo Jalava I hope you have been getting out and exploring Elgin this summer, and recording and submitting all of your interesting sightings. While out in the field this summer Carolinian Canada staff have come across many species at risk and provincially tracked species, including some rare ferns such as the Narrow-leaved Glade Fern, Goldie’s Wood Fern, and Broad Beech Fern. There is still time to get out and participate in the Elgin Natural Heritage Inventory (click here to get involved). This time of year is a great time to look for reptiles and amphibians as well as birds migrating south for the winter. This is also a good time of year to see the bright scarlet leaves of the Black Gum and Eastern Flowering Dogwood or the bright yellow leaves of the Butternut. That being said fall is here and that means hunting season is about to begin. It is very important that you are aware of who owns the property you are on and the activities permitted on it. Some dates to keep in mind: Deer Hunting (Archery Season) has 4 hunting periods: Deer Hunting (Black Powder) has 3 hunting periods: If you do find yourself out in the field during this time near a property where hunting is permitted, it is important that you wear hunter orange to make you stand out.
