Chatham-Kent Approves Natural Heritage Implementation Strategy

Become a Member Today!

The Chatham-Kent Natural Heritage Implementation Strategy was approved by municipal council on July 14. The Strategy, endorsed by Carolinian Canada’s Board of Directors in June, was praised by each of the many councillors who spoke during the pre-vote discussion. Its approval demonstrates Chatham-Kent’s commitment to implementing conservation action plans developed by Carolinian Canada with 39 local groups over the past three years. Using a natural heritage systems-based approach, these plans, which are included in the Strategy, outline concrete actions and timelines to conserve and restore habitat in this highly-threatened yet biologically-diverse landscape. With municipal funding, two new positions at the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority are being created to implement the Strategy and monitor its effectiveness. While Strategy’s approval is widely seen as a positive step, its effectiveness over the coming years will determine whether a complementary conservation bylaw, the subject of highly-charged public debate over the past two years, will also be needed to protect the remaining fragile habitats in the municipality.

Thanks to the support of Environment Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and a host of other partners for supporting our programs to "Green the Future of Canada’s Deep South".

Jarmo Jalava, Director of Ecosystem Recovery

REMEMBERING DON SINCLAIR

Kelly Johnson, Habitat Stewardship Specialist for Carolinian Canada

I met Don Sinclair and his wife Amy back in December because they had an interest in participating in the Landowner Leaders program in Chatham-Kent. I left that meeting confident that Don would be an ideal person for the program because of his passion for and dedication to wildlife habitat restoration and protection of species at risk. At that meeting I also learned that Don was undergoing treatment for a cancerous brain tumour.

I worked with Don and Amy throughout the winter on their plans for a 1 acre tallgrass prairie planting at their farm. This project would complement others Don had undertaken on the property including wetland creation and enhancement, and the planting of native trees. Don and Amy’s property has often been used as a demonstration site for other landowners interested in implementing conservation projects on their properties and Don always welcomed students and young people to his property, passing on his passion for conservation. Unfortunately on May 13th the conservation world lost this great ally.

One month from his passing, at the Chatham Relay for Life event, I presented Don’s wife Amy and children Sarah and Arthur with a plaque recognizing his dedication and contributions to conservation in the Carolinian Life Zone. Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority also donated 150 native tree seedlings; one for each survivor participating in the Relay. This donation was made in memory of Don and his conservation efforts.

Carolinian Canada Coalition is very grateful to the Sinclair family for requesting donations in Don’s memory be made to Carolinian Canada Coalition and we would like to thank the many individuals who donated.  These donations will assist us in our on-going efforts towards ecosystem recovery in the Carolinian Life Zone.
