Volunteers play a critical role in supporting conservation and restoration goals and activities. Whether your organization has a long history of working with volunteers or you're in the process of building your volunteer base, this session will equip you with helpful tools to create a sustainable volunteer community.

What motivates volunteers? A synthesis of two decades of research

Volunteers are a valuable resource for conservation organizations, but it can often be difficult for organizations to motivate and retain them.

Join Tim Alamenciak to learn what the scholarly research says about the motivation to participate in conservation and ecological restoration. Tim will present a framework of 15 key motivations that can be used to attract and retain more volunteers.

Tim Alamenciak is a conservation and restoration ecology researcher working on decision-making, knowledge synthesis and volunteer engagement at the intersection of academia and practice. He is a postdoctoral fellow in the Bennett Lab at Carleton University, a research fellow with the DRAGEN Lab and an adjunct associate professor in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability at the University of Waterloo.
