Feature Panel: SAVE HEALTHY LANDSCAPES

The Federal Government has signed on to protect 17% of Canada’s natural areas by 2020. What does that mean for Canada’s most biodiverse and populated region, Southern Ontario? Our panel experts will discuss links between protecting nature, treaty rights and obligations, sustainable agriculture and healthy communities. To scale up the protected natural areas in Southern Ontario, a diverse range of partners from the environment, Indigenous, private, government and agricultural sectors need to find ways to collaborate for the protection of nature and healthy communities. Building a culture of protection in Southern Ontario is imperative on a landscape that is comprised of 95% private land ownership. The discussion will focus on solutions, opportunities and strategies relating to key questions like:

• How can diverse sectors work together to protect nature for healthy communities?
• How do we develop cost effective natural infrastructure solutions to benefit wildlife, water, climate, agriculture and communities?
• How can we achieve 17% protection in highly populated regions such as in Southern Ontario?

Moderated by expert ecologist and Protected Areas strategist Jarmo Jalava.
